In my preview for this one I was hopeful of a Thunder victory but unfortunately they came up short in Penryn this afternoon. As I said, I haven't been there this afternoon so won't be able to comment on any performances but will give some of my thoughts.
Firstly, congratulations to Cornwall on their victory. As we know all too well at Thunder it's not easy being outside the heartlands in this sport and I do have a lot of time and respect for what Cornwall do.
Now onto Thunder, if we're looking at improvement season on season then the result itself is an improvement in terms of the scoreline compared to last seasons trip to Penryn. Following the game on the Cornwall X account (thanks for the updates by the way!) it looks as though they played a lot down the wing of Henry Symons. Thunder looked to have soaked up a lot of early pressure and then took a 0-6 lead. One frustration, and I'm sure it's not just for me is we conceded a try just before half time not for the first time. We could've gone in 14-6 behind instead going in 20-6 behind.
The second half gives some encouragement, the lads look like they didn't give up and it was fiery and feisty but Thunder took the second half 16-12.
I think there'll be some disappointment in the result but I trust Chris Thorman to work with this young team and they'll put things right they need to. It's a tough league and sometimes improvement isn't necessarily in results but in performance and sometimes down to small percentages.
League One round up
In the days other games there was a 26-10 win for Dewsbury at Swinton which bodes well for them at this early stage as they look for an immediate return to The Championship. North Wales took the spoils 28-6 on another away day for them at Goole, they have done some serious miles at North Wales already this season! Midlands pulled off a brilliant victory at Cougar Park as they beat Keighley 24-26 to maintain their unbeaten league start to the season. Finally up in Cumbria there was another slight surprise for me as Whitehaven beat the fancied Rochdale Hornets 24-20.
My result of the day is Midlands winning at Keighley.
Up next for Thunder
Next Sunday sees another tough game for Thunder at home to an in-form Midlands outfit who will be buoyed by their victory this afternoon. Kick off next Sunday 30th March is 15:00 at Blaydon, turn up and get behind our Newcastle Thunder.
